After talking to people in and around the organization, the main reason the Detroit Lions released running back Kevin Jones is because of his past injury history and his uncertain short-term future.

After suffering a Lisfranc injury to his left foot in 2006 — and enduring a long recovery process — Jones tore the ACL in his right knee late last season. It’s that injury that concerns Lions head coach Rod Marinelli the most.
While Jones believes he’ll be ready for the start of training camp, the Lions don’t believe he’s going to be close to 100 percent at that point and, based on the recovery of other players with similar injuries, the Lions don’t think Jones will be fully recovered until some point in the middle of the season. Considering that Jones is on the last year of his contract and that he’s scheduled to make $2.37 million in salary, the Lions decided to go in another direction at running back.

There is also the concern that Jones — after both injuries — won’t be the same player he was in the early years of his career. It was part of the decision-making process.

General Motors Corp. is warning the owners of 207,542 Buick Regal and Pontiac Grand Prix sedans not to park them in garages because they can catch fire. The Detroit automaker said Friday it is recalling the 1997-2003 Buick Regal GS and Grand Prix GTP models with 3.8-liter supercharged V-6 engines.

During hard braking, drops of oil can leak from the engine onto the exhaust manifold, and fires can start if the oil gets hot enough, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said on its Web site.

GM sent letters to the owners on Thursday telling them the vehicles are safe to drive, but they should not be parked in garages, carports or other structures until the problem is repaired, spokeswoman Carolyn Markey said.

The automaker is working with suppliers to get the parts to fix the problem, and owners will be notified as soon as the parts are available, Markey said. She did not know how long it would take to get the parts but said it would be soon.

If owners smell burning, they should take their car to a dealership for inspection, she said.

A Monitor Township trustee has changed his vote, and now Consumers Energy has a perfect record when it comes to resolutions of support for a proposed new power plant in Bay County’s Hampton Township. At a meeting Monday, the Monitor Township Board of Trustees reconsidered a resolution of support for the plant.

The resolution had failed 4-3 at a meeting in February, the first time any local board or agency in the region had turned down the resolution, floated by Consumers Energy officials.

On Monday, Trustee Marvin E. Neumeyer changed his mind, making for a 4-3 vote in favor of the resolution.

“It’s a real good thing for our community,” Neumeyer said this morning.

He contends the board didn’t vote the resolution down last month, “we just voted not to take particular action on that night.” Neumeyer said he voted no last month because he didn’t have enough information at the time.

The district also will begin using cleaner-burning B-20 in its buses, or fuel that’s 20 percent bio-based, up from B-2 fuel used currently.

Students will learn about the cleaner technology and be involved in emission testing as part of the project with help from Saginaw Valley State University, said Kathy Dickens, principal of Laker Junior High, who applied for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency grant.

A Michigan congresswoman said Friday that the state’s Democrats are working on plans for a June 3 primary that would give them a say in the tight presidential nomination race between Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama.

Rep. Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick said the primary would be statewide and would be funded through party money. She is one of four Democrats who are not endorsing either candidate who are working together on a plan for a repeat primary.

Clinton won a primary the state held in January, but Obama’s name wasn’t on the ballot. He had it removed because the primary was held too early to comply with national party rules, meaning no delegates were at stake.

The split between John McCain and the conservative base of his party is old news. By contrast, current headlines that McCain’s differences are only with the talk radio “base” is a storyline largely driven by media Democrats.Bob Dole’s memos to Rush Limbaugh aside, the McCain vs. Radio Right flames are being fanned by liberal sources from Newsweek to The Atlantic’s Ross Douthat to The Washington Post’s Richard Cohen.

Their curious interest in referring internal Republican disputes is in part due to their own fondness for McCain’s maverick, Big Government polices. But it also dovetails with their caricature of Republicans as right-wing yahoos who daily bay at the moon. In reality, the Republican business base is also uncomfortable with its social-movement bedfellows.

Hispanics have one chance in six of being confined in prison during their lifetimes, the authors found.
